Overview

The ClimAccelerator is a global programme for climate startups to innovate, catalyse, and scale the potential of their solutions. The programme supports climate startups that are creating solutions to protect people, their jobs, homes and the environment from the effects of climate change.

Through the programme, startups receive hands-on mentorship from experts who understand the challenges, access to funding that can actually move the needle, expert support to strengthen their climate impact, and the chance to test their solutions where they're needed most. The goal is simple: help you build a business that creates meaningful change for people and the planet.

ClimAccelerator is powered by Climate KIC, Europe’s leading climate innovation agency and community working to accelerate the transition to a zero-carbon and resilient world. The ClimAccelerator in Tanzania is run in collaboration with SmartLab and funded by Irish Aid.

Adaptation and Resilience Innovations
What do we mean by adaptation and resilience innovations?

Adaptation and resilience innovations are solutions that protect people, their homes, jobs and the environment from the impacts of climate change. The ClimAccelerator seeks ventures that create meaningful, lasting change by addressing the challenges climate change brings to communities. Examples include (but are not limited to):

Sustainable agriculture & food systems:
Strengthening food security and farmer resilience
  • Drought-tolerant crops and indigenous seed banks
  • Post-harvest storage innovations to reduce spoilage
  • Mobile platforms for agro-advisory and market access
  • Regenerative farming practices (e.g. mulching, intercropping)
  • Nutrition-sensitive agriculture for vulnerable communities
Water management & access
Ensuring reliable, equitable access to water in changing climates
  • Rainwater harvesting and storage systems
  • Low-cost water purification and filtration technologies
  • Climate-smart irrigation (e.g. drip systems, solar pumps)
  • Community-led watershed restoration
  • Smart metering and leak detection for water efficiency
  • Water access mapping and mobile reporting tools
  • Nature-based solutions for flood and drought mitigation
Renewable energy for climate adaptation
Powering resilience through clean, decentralized energy
  • Solar-powered cold chains for food and medicine
  • Off-grid energy for schools, clinics and emergency response
  • Microgrids for disaster-prone or remote communities
  • Energy access for climate-smart agriculture (e.g. solar irrigation)
  • Battery storage innovations for energy reliability
Climate-smart land use & agroforestry
Protecting ecosystems while supporting livelihoods.
  • Agroforestry models that combine trees with crops
  • Reforestation and afforestation with community stewardship
  • Land restoration using indigenous knowledge
  • Urban greening for heat reduction and flood control
  • Sustainable grazing and rotational pasture systems
  • Land tenure innovations that support adaptive land use
Early warning & climate information systems
Empowering communities with timely, actionable climate data.
  • SMS-based early warning alerts for floods, droughts or storms
  • Community climate monitors and local data hubs
  • Integration of indigenous forecasting with tech systems
  • Climate dashboards for farmers and local planners
  • Risk mapping tools for disaster preparedness
  • Radio or mobile campaigns for climate literacy
Waste & circular economy (linked to adaptation outcomes)
Reducing resource strain and building resilience through reuse.
  • Composting systems for soil health and food security
  • Upcycled building materials for climate-resilient housing
  • Plastic waste repurposing into tools or water storage
  • Repair and reuse networks to reduce supply chain vulnerability
  • Community-led recycling cooperatives
  • Organic waste valorisation for climate-smart farming
  • Circular textiles for heat-adaptive clothing or shelter
  • Decentralised waste-to-energy systems
  • Cooling technologies with circular design

Note: Please note, the programme aims to support solutions that are primarily climate adaptation focused (including but not limited to the above list), rather than solutions focused on mitigation.

How is climate adaptation and resilience different from climate mitigation?
MITIGATION

Slowing down climate change by reducing the problem at its source. Mitigation means cutting greenhouse gas emissions and helping the planet absorb more of them. This includes changing how we produce energy, travel, and grow food. Examples include solar panels, electric vehicles and restoring forests.

ADAPTATION

Adjusting to the changes we can’t avoid. Adaptation is about finding smart ways to live with a changing climate. This includes updating how we build homes, manage water or grow crops to reduce risks like heatwaves, floods or sea level rise. It helps protect people, nature and daily life from current and future impacts.

RESILIENCE

Being ready for what the future brings. Resilience means preparing for, responding to and recovering from climate shocks like storms or droughts. It is about staying strong, flexible and being able to bounce back. Resilience includes adaptation, especially over time, because it helps communities deal with both today's challenges and those still to come.
